Washington: According to report by CNN reported and the Government Accountability Office, stolen US military items have been posted for sale on Craigslist and eBay. Government investigators said that the buyers are able to buy some of the prohibited items of the military that can be easily shipped abroad and “used directly against our troops and allies.”
The US military items include two components of the F-14 fighter jet, which have been retired by the military and are only being used by Iran currently. Other items include specially designed night-vision goggles, army combat uniforms, the sale of which were prohibited by the military in 2007, and specially enhanced body armor vests that are used by the US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
According to eBay officials, there are over 113 million products for sale at any given time and the military items are only a minor percentage of those. Despite the ban on the sale of army combat uniforms, there are several ones available on eBay. “With 7 million listings being added every day, we do the best we can, but things slip through from time to time,” says Kim Rubey, the senior PR manager of eBay.
eBay’s Vice-President, Tod Cohen, said that they work diligently to exclude prohibited items on their site. He said, “We created prohibited and restricted items policies and built tools using state-of-the-art technology to enforce those policies.” The CEO of Craigslist, Jim Buckmaster, said that there are confusing regulations about the items that can and cannot be sold. He said, “it would simplify things greatly if a law were passed banning the sale of any U.S. military item less than 50 years old.”
