Miley Cyrus apologizes for Vanity Fair photo shoot
April 30, 2008
San Francisco, California (WiredPRNews.com) — On Monday, famed celebrity photographer Anna Leibovitz defended her photograph of teen sensation Miley Cyrus (aka Hannah Montana) for Vanity Fair magazine who expressed embarrassment about the pose. In a written statement, Annie Lebovitz said, “I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted. Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”
The statement came after Miley Cyrus, 15, apologized to her fans for taking part in photo shoot that showed her bare body draped by a white cloth exposing her back. The photo shoot took place in Calabasas, California on February 9. Cyrus, daughter of singer Billy Ray Cyrus, seems to have immediately known that she would face criticism from parents and fans her age. In a written statement, Cyrus told her fans, “My goal in my music and my acting is always to make people happy. For Vanity Fair, I was so honored and thrilled to work with Annie.”
She continued, “I appreciate all the support of my fans and hope they understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect. I never intended for any of this to happen and I am truly sorry if I have disappointed anyone. Most of all, I have let myself down. I will learn from my mistakes and trust my support team. My family and my faith will guide me through my life’s journey.”
According to People.com, “While 51 percent thought the photos might harm Cyrus’s professional standing, 49 percent thought the provocative pictures might, in fact, boost it.”
