Inmates to play cards while solving crimes
May 6, 2008
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (WiredPRNews.com) — What is the best way for an inmate serving time in prison for a crime to redeem themselves while in the slammer? By solving other crimes, that’s how! In a recent report by Reuters, inmates serving time in 58 New York county jails will have the opportunity to recreationally play cards while helping to solve unclosed cases.
According to the report, the inmates of the county jails will be issued playing cards with pictures of missing individuals with the goal of reviving a memory that could assist in solving the case. 7,200 decks of cards will be distributed under the Senate pilot program, and each card will be marked with the tip line telephone numbers.
In keeping with protocol, anyone who provides information that leads to the resolution of a missing persons case can stand to collect a reward–prisoners included. Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno were funded by a $10,000 grant from funds he controls.
In a statement, Bruno noted, “”This program seeks to go right to the source of crime, providing incarcerated criminals information via playing cards who, in turn, may have credible information or leads that help solve these crimes.”
As per a statement from a Bruno spokesperson, a similar program was put into effect at Florida prisons with favorable results in closing old cases.
