Dallas-Based Restaurant Chain Settles Sex Discrimination Lawsuit Brought by the EEOC

May 17, 2008

Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) — Razzoo’s Cajun Café, a Dallas-based Cajun food restaurant chain, will pay one million dollars and provide remedial relief to settle a sex discrimination lawsuit filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”).

The EEOC sued Razzoo’s on behalf of male applicants and male employees, alleging that Razzoo’s refused to hire men to work as bartenders in its restaurants because Razzoo’s sought an 80-to-20 ratio of female bartenders to male bartenders. The settlement agreement provides that Razzoo’s will pay $775,000 to the class of male applicants and male employees who were discriminated against. It also requires Razzoo’s to spend at least $225,000 for human resources services and to provide training on equal employment opportunity issues for all Razzoo’s employees. Razzoo’s also agrees that it will not engage in future discrimination.

It is a myth that only women can be sexually discriminated against. Federal and state laws prohibit employers from making employment decisions based upon a person’s gender – male or female. Thus, a planned ratio designed to maintain a certain percentage of female employees to male employees may violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
