Fort Worth, TX (WiredPRNews.com)—Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Joe Biden says that an Obama/Biden Administration will pursue criminal charges against President George W. Bush.
According to an UK Telegraph.co.uk news story by Toby Harnden published last week, Biden stated that Bush would be prosecuted over the treatment of captured terrorists held at the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The individuals held at Gitmo, who are classified as enemy combatants because they do not represent an organized state, include the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheik Mohammed.
“If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued,” Biden said at a Deerfield Beach, Florida campaign stop, according to the online UK Telegraph article. However, the article and Senator Biden did not provide any specific allegations of crimes.
Senator Barack Obama echoed Biden’s view earlier in the year when he stated that an Obama administration would look at whether Bush has violated laws or engaged in bad policies. However, this move by the Democrat nominees may have seriously undermined their chances of winning the White House in November.
However, the campaign later reversed course when Biden remarked to the Philadelphia Daily News that he did not want the start of an Obama/Biden term to appear like a ‘witch hunt.’
The issue of treatment of detainees has been major difference between the Republican Party and the Democrat Party. Detainees receive culturally appropriate meals, Korans, prayer mats, books and several hours of recreation time every day.
