Identity Theft An Increasing Issue – Dallas Gas Stations – Several recent reports of identity theft cases in Dallas have been linked to gas purchases with debit and credit cards. As reported in the Dallas Morning News, the issue with identity theft has become a huge risk for individuals throughout the Dallas community who pay for their gas at the pump. Victims are believed to be part of a new crime trend perpetrated on a national scale by crooks who’ve identified a means of stealing the account and pin numbers of card holders through automated pumps. Card readers can be inserted onto pump devices and often go unnoticed by users. Information obtained is reportedly used to make fake credit or debit cards that enable thieves to steal from real cardholder accounts. Once stolen, restoring one’s account can be a lengthy process.
On the heels of significant decreases in average gas prices, the new threats have hindered the ability of some in the Dallas community to feel a sense of peace. In the city of Plano, at least 50 identity theft victims have been identified in connection with this issue. Investigations continue for these and other cases throughout Dallas.
