Wired PR News.com – The beloved grandmother of Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidency, Barack Obama, has passed away, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Senator Obama released a statement regarding the death of his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, on Monday. Ms. Dunham was said to have died peacefully following her battle with cancer.
As stated in The Chicago Tribune the Senator learned of his grandmother’s death at approximately 8:00 a.m. Monday morning. He was at the time campaigning in Florida.
Ms. Dunham, 87, died one day before the possible announcement of her grandchild as the first African American President of the United States. Senator Obama credits his grandmother with playing an instrumental role in his success by instilling in him important core values while helping raise him. Of his grandmother, Obama was quoted by the AP as stating “She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances.”
