Wired PR News.com – The Disney Channel’s top ranked television show, Hanna Montana, was set to begin its third season with an episode containing a heavy hitting plot about dealing with diabetes. However, changes were made after executives made the decision to postpone airing the episode for evaluation. As reported by E! Online, the network wanted to ensure that the disease was portrayed in a responsible manner, and chose to pull it from the lineup for further review.
The episode, title “No Sugar, Sugar” was slated to air on November 2, but was replaced with “He Ain’t a Hottie, He’s My Brother” as the premiere episode. E! Online reported that a representative for Disney commented “We will await the results of the episode review by a variety of experts and then will make a determination on the episode’s future… there is great interest, especially from parents, in seeing the subject of living with diabetes somehow incorporated into our storytelling for kids and families, so we’re hopeful we’ll do so in the future.”
Parents and viewers purportedly expressed concerns to Disney regarding the appropriateness of how the subject matter would be presented to television audiences.
