Wired PR News.com – Oscar winner Charlize Theron is providing her support to the cause of ending violence against women and girls worldwide by serving as a Messenger of Peace for the United Nation. As reported by the Associated Press, Theron stated on Monday that “This is something that has been very dear to me, and disturbing to me for a long time.”
Theron, a native of South Africa, was 15 years old when her mother shot and killed her father in self defense while he was threatening she and her daughter. In addition to her real life experiences, Theron has acted in two movies, Monster and North Country, that dealt with domestic violence, in which she garnered Oscar attention for her character portrayals.
The actress and activist is founder of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project which helps promote AIDS/HIV education for poor South African families.
