Acclaimed Author of “The Miracle Worker” Dies

William Gibson, playwright and author of the critically acclaimed story “The Miracle Worker” has died at the age of 94, as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Wired PR News.com

Born in New York in 1914, Gibson wrote several plays throughout his career, however his true story of deaf-blind woman, Helen Keller has for almost half a century been his most recognizable work to date. The script was originally written for television, but became a Broadway production in 1959. Actresses Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke starred in the stage production as well as the subsequent Academy Award winning film.

As quoted in the AP report of New York Times critic Brooks Atkinson, “Nothing in the theatre this season is so overwhelming as the last inarticulate but eloquent scene in which a frantic little girl for the first time understands the meaning of a word and realizes that the teacher is not a fiend but a friend.” The writer also won a Tony award for his play “Two for the Seasaw.”

Gibson was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Brenman-Gibson in 2004.
