Congresswoman Hangs Up on Obama Call Assuming it Was a Prank

Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen hung up on a call from President Elect Barack Obama this week, believing it to be a prank. As reported by the Times Online, the Florida Congresswoman hung up on Obama as well as his Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel after he called to vouch that President’s call was real. Obama was finally able to get through to Ros-Lehtinen on a third try after Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman phoned her about the call.
Ros-Lehtinen was quoted in the Times Online report as stating “I thought it was one of the radio stations in South Florida playing an incredible, elaborate, terrific prank on me.” She was said to have remarked to Obama that his impersonation was better than a comedian’s on Saturday Night Live.
Obama reportedly later told the Congresswoman that her mistake was not uncommon, and the two shared a laugh about her hang ups. Ros-Lehtinen’s office subsequently released a statement explaining that it had been a misunderstanding.
