Muslim Woman Held in Contempt for Refusal to Take off Scarf
A judge held a Muslim woman in contempt of court for violating court policy by not taking off scarf.
Wired PR News.com – A judge in Georgia ordered the arrest of a woman of Muslim faith last week for allegedly refusing to obey court policy by not taking off her head scarf as requested by security. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Lisa Valentine was given 10 days in jail after she reportedly vented an expletive after being told she would not be let into a courtroom wearing her hijab, and attempted to leave.
Valentine was quoted as stating in the AP report after the incident “I just felt stripped of my civil, my human rights.” The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called for an investigation into the matter and similar occurrences that have taken place in Georgia. Officials released Valentine suddenly after the organization became involved, but declined to comment on the case.
