Tough economic times lead more individuals to apply for federal health care assistance.
Wired PR News.com – The current recession has left a record number of individuals in need of assistance with providing for themselves and their families. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the number of individuals applying for Medicaid has steadily increased as the country grows deeper into a recession.
Massive layoffs have been central to the financial distress many families have been said to currently be in, which have left some with the inability to get insurance to cover to the costs of health care. Numerous individuals now view applying for Medicaid as their only solution.
As noted in the report, governors around the nation have asked the federal government for increases in Medicaid spending to help balance state budgets affected by the huge spike in unemployment rates. It has been estimated that one million people are added to the Medicaid program for every one percent the unemployment rate increases. One out of every six individuals classified as low-income in the United States receive Medicaid assistance. Half of those supported are children.
