A referee official in Dallas dies after working tournament game.
Wired PR News.com – A referee for the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) collapsed during a tournament game on Monday and was later pronounced dead. As reported by CBS 11 News, the referee, 48 year-old Jake Bethany, collapsed in a hallway before the latter half of a game he was working was set to begin. Bethany was taken to R.H. Dedman Memorial Center where he was pronounced dead.
As noted in the CBS 11 report, officials honored Bethany at the beginning of the DISD championship game on Wednesday.
Bethany was a basketball player for Hardin-Simmons for three years, from 1979-1982 and a draft pick of the Phoenix Suns. He later coached for the University of Dallas.
Information on the cause of death had yet to be released at the time of the report.
