Contaminated peanut butter has been determined to be the source of salmonella poisoning that has led to 400 people becoming ill and possibly 3 deaths.
Wired PR News.com – Health officials have announced that the recent salmonella outbreak that has caused the illnesses of over 400 people, and the possible deaths of three, has been found in peanut butter. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), tests have confirmed that the bacteria strain found in a package of King Nut peanut butter is a match to the strain found to have contributed to several reported illnesses. The outbreak is reported to have affected individuals in 43 states.
Doug Schultz of the Minnesota Department of Heath is quoted by the AP as stating, “The commonality among all of our patients was that they ate peanut butter.” The contaminated peanut butter is used in food service, and not for sale directly to consumers, however, many fear that it may still be currently used by some institutions. Those who may be in possession of it have been urged to throw it away.
