A pre-Inaugural concert held at the Lincoln Memorial Sunday was packed with star-power.
Wired PR News.com — A crowd of up to a half million people were expected to attend a pre-inaugural concert Sunday on the National Mall in Washington D.C., as reported by the Associated Press (AP). Rev. Gene Robinson was the first to speak at the event, offering a prayer and asking that everyone remember that Obama is a human being and not a messiah.
Barack Obama, his wife Michelle, and Vice President elect Joe Biden and wife Jill sat near the stage protected by bulletproof glass. Under the watchful stare of the statue of Abraham Lincoln, a diverse group of celebrity performers entertained and enlightened the crowd. Bruce Springsteen sung “The Rising” which was written following the 9/11 attacks.
Other performers at the event included Bono, Sheryl Crow, Usher, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Garth Brooks, James Taylor and Shakira. Denzel Washington spoke to the crowd telling them “We’re all in this together.” Actor/ singer/ comedian Jamie Foxx was also on hand with an impersonation of Barack Obama.
Tiger Woods, whose father was in the military, encouraged the crowd to remember the sacrifices military families make. Actor Tom Hanks, most famous for his role as Forrest Gump, gave a speech honoring Abraham Lincoln. Joe Biden also spoke to the crowd stating as quoted by the AP, “Look around you. Look at the grace and the grandeur that surrounds us and you’ll see the work of American hands.”
