Obama Calls for Close of Gitmo
President Barack Obama ordered the closing of Guantanamo detention center on Thursday.
Wired PR News.com – President Barack Obama called for major changes on Thursday, in what many state is exemplary of forceful efforts to split from Bush policies regarding war and terrorism. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Obama called for the closing of the Guantanamo detention center and fighting against terrorism in what he is quoted as stating, “a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals.”
Obama is further quoted as stating, “We intend to win this fight. We’re going to win it on our terms.” The series of executive orders signed by the president will, as noted by the AP, require that Gitmo prison camp be closed within a year as well as require the closing of what have been termed CIA “black site” prisons overseas. The orders will also restrict the use of harsh techniques in the interrogation of prison detainees by the CIA.
Obama is also quoted in the report to comment, “We think that it is precisely our ideals that give us the strength and the moral high ground to be able to effectively deal with the unthinking violence that we see emanating from terrorist organizations around the world.”
