Dallas officials set to discuss extending curfew to daytime hours.
WiredPRNews.com – Members of Dallas City Hall will reportedly discuss an expansion of the current nighttime juvenile curfew that would include daytime hours. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), proponents of the expansion have expressed the belief that the new curfew would be beneficial in decreasing rates of crime.
Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia is quoted in the report as stating, “When 63 percent of the juvenile arrests occur during school hours I believe we have a problem.” The daytime curfew would possibly be in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays.
As noted by the AP, parents and others also believe that the new curfew could help greatly reduce the number of unexcused absences in area districts, which would allow schools to receive more funding.
A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for March, with a final vote set for April.
