Orlando Lopez of the Cuban music group has died.
Wired PR News.com – Orlando “Cachaito” Lopez of the legendary Cuban band Buena Vista Social Club has died at the age of 76. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the bassist deemed the “heartbeat” of the legendary group passed away Monday due to complications following prostate surgery.
Manuel Galban, a musician who played with Lopez is quoted in the report as stating of the bassist, “We have lost a great companion… I will remember him as marvelous, both in his music and as a person.”
Lopez was a founding member of the Buena Vista Social Club, which was formed in the 1990s. The group soon after earned worldwide recognition for their talent. Lopez also made a solo album, which earned him a BBC Radio 3 World Music Award in 2002. As noted in the report, the Cuban mambo pioneer was among more than 30 bass players in his family.
