Lawmakers seek expert advice following the suicide deaths of three children.
Wired PR News.com – Lawmakers in Illinois are seeking out expert advice for the prevention of suicide in children. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the recent suicides of three children have motivated lawmakers to promptly hold a public discussion on the pressing issue, that may be possibly escalated by a growing recession.
Dr. Diahann Meekins Moore with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is quoted in the report as stating on the matter, “We are living at an incredibly stressful time in this country and studies have shown that there is an effect on kids’ brains that have been chronically exposed to stress and that ultimately it can lead to … development of mental health disorders or issues.”
Experts note that awareness of the public is important for suicide prevention. Carol Wozniewski with Mental Health of America Illinois is quoted as remarking of the urgency, “We have to educate and empower our youth and break down the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and suicide in order to save lives.”
