The defamed financier is taken to jail after pleading guilty to fraud charges.
Wired PR News – Disgraced financier Bernard Madoff was taken to jail in handcuffs Thursday after pleading guilty to charges of fraud. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Madoff, apologized for cheating his victims out of billions of dollars in court before being sent to jail amid applause from scorned investors.
The 70 year-old is quoted as stating of being imprisoned for the $65 billion scandal, “I realized that my arrest and this day would inevitably come… I am actually grateful for this opportunity to publicly comment about my crimes, for which I am deeply sorry and ashamed.”
Madoff is further quoted as stating, “When I began the Ponzi scheme I believed it would end shortly and I would be able to extricate myself and my clients from the scheme… However, this proved difficult, and ultimately impossible, and as the years went by I realized that my arrest and this day would inevitably come.”
Many are unhappy with the circumstances surrounding Madoff’s guilty plea. Some expected to learn the names of others who may have been involved in the scam, or where lost monies have gone. Judith Welling is quoted in the report as remarking, “He’s trying to save the rest of his family… We need to find out who else was involved, and we need, obviously, to freeze the assets of all those people involved to help the victims.”
