The popular prescription medication is said to possibly be habit forming.
Wired PR News – The drug used in the treatment of excessive sleepiness, Provigil, may be addictive according to new research. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the medication, said to be referred to as the “smart drug” and used illegally as a study aid for some college students, was found to have similar effects on the brain as classic stimulants known to be habit forming.
Dr. Nora Volkow, who directs the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and was part of the Modafinil research study, is quoted as stating, “It would be wonderful if one could take a drug and be smarter, faster or have more energy… But that is like fairy tales. We currently have nothing that has those benefits without side effects.”
Information about the study is published in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.
