A young male has reportedly committed suicide at the state run TYC.
Wired PR News – A young male sentenced to time in a Texas Youth Commission (TYC) facility has committed suicide. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the person, whose name or age has not been identified, was said to have taken his own life early this week at the Commission’s Crockett State School.
Cherie Townsend, Executive Commissioner of TYC, is quoted in the Dallas Morning News report as stating of the incident, “No death of a young person can be anything but tragic… We will conduct a comprehensive investigation to determine how this young man was able to take his life while in our custody.”
Townsend is further noted to state that grief counseling and mental health assessments would be made available for the youth at the facility.
TYC was previously at the center of controversy amid a 2007 child sex abuse scandal. A lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in 2008 against the Commission concerning several alleged violations of inmate rights.
