Legislation Approved to Expand AmeriCorps

Congress approves a measure for the expansion of AmeriCorps.Wired PR News – A House vote approved a bill to put billions of more dollars towards the AmeriCorps volunteer program. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the measure passed on Tuesday will provide for $5.7 billion to expand the program created during the Clinton Administration in 1993.President Barack Obama, who is noted in the report to have placed high emphasis on national service programs, will reportedly sign the bill upon returning to Washington from his European trip.The President is quoted in the report as releasing the statement, “I call on all Americans to stand up and do what they can to serve their communities, shape our history and enrich both their own lives and the lives of others across this country.”Rep. George Miller is quoted as stating during legislative debate regarding the measure, “History has … shown that in time of crisis, Americans turn to service and volunteering for healing, for rebuilding and for hope. The spirit of generosity in the American people is one of the greatest assets of our nation.”
