News Corp CEO says the survival of news papers may lie in charging fees for accessing their information.
Wired PR News – The Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, Rupert Murdoch recently commented on the need for news media outlets to charge for their information online. As reported by Reuters, Murdoch suggested that online advertising is not enough to sustain newspapers, which have been struggling with significant declining revenue.
Murdoch is quoted in the Reuters report as stating while at The Cable Show annual event in Washington D.C., “People reading news for free on the Web, that’s got to change.” Murdoch’s company is one that charges visitors to view their online news.
As noted in the AP report, many news publishers question whether people would be willing to pay for their news information in the current economic environment, and are scrambling for ideas on ways to become more profitable.
