Asbestos removal has been planned for an elementary school in Philadelphia. As reported by the community’s Daily Local News, the Kennett Consolidated School District is set to remove asbestos from panels at the Mary D. Lang Elementary school building, which will be made into a kindergarten center upon completion of the district’s new elementary school.

As noted in the report, the panels, installed in the building in 1970, are said to be made of non-friable asbestos. This type of asbestos reportedly does not produce fibers, and the panels, which had been inspected periodically in accordance with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, are not a current risk to students according to the school’s buildings and grounds manager Bob Perzel. However, repairs over the years have been required to ensure that the panels were maintained safely, and final removal will be included with the school’s major renovations.

The work is set to begin in the summer.
