Doctors Said to Have Aided in CIA Torture
The Red Cross alleges that health workers assisted with the torture of terrorism suspects.
Wired PR News – The Red Cross has stated that some medical workers were in violation of ethics codes while they participated in the interrogation of terrorism suspects. As reported by Reuters, the health workers were said to have aided in the torture of prisoners by the CIA overseas as outlined in a report by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
As noted in the Reuters report, the ICRC stated that the health care workers advised interrogators on handling the torture and abuse of prisoners. The Committee is quoted as stating, “any interrogation process that requires a health professional to either pronounce on the subject’s fitness to withstand such a procedure, or which requires a health professional to monitor the actual procedure, must have inherent health risks… As such, the interrogation process is contrary to international law and the participation of health personnel in such a process is contrary to international standards of medical ethics.”
