A mother accused of kidnapping, rape, and murder was arraigned on Thursday.
Wired PR News – A California mother accused of rape, murder, and kidnapping was arraigned on the charges Tuesday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 28 year-old Melissa Huckaby was charged with the murder of her daughter’s 8 year-old friend, Sandra Cantu, which was said to have occurred around March 27. The child was found in a suitcase several days after her disappearance.
Huckaby could face the death penalty or a sentence of life without the possibility of parole for the crimes. As noted by the AP, the volunteer Sunday school teacher cried while the judge who presided over the hearing read the charge. Of her emotional state during the proceedings, neighbor Josie Orozco is quoted in the report as stating after the arraignment, “She knew what she was doing. She could have asked for help. She could have gone to a doctor if she was sick this way.”
Huckaby is set to return to court on April 24 and enter a plea.
