Child Abuse Shown to Have Increased During Recession
More cases of child abuse are being seen across the country amid recession.
Wired PR News – The rough times for the economy has seemed to lead to something even more disturbing than a broken financial system. As reported by Reuters, a larger number of child abuse cases are being seen across the country during the recession.
Child protection agencies are growing overwhelmed by the number of abuse cases being reported by hospitals, individuals, and other entities, as more families struggle financially. Allison Scobie who directs Boston’s Children’s Hospital’s Child Protection Team, is quoted as stating of the problem, “In the last three months we have twice as many severe inflicted injury cases as we did in the three months the previous year… We’re finding that it is directly attributable to what is happening economically… Many of the hospitals around here report an increase of 20 to 30 percent of requests for consultation regarding suspected child maltreatment.”
Many hospitals and agencies left to deal with the issue are attempting to do so with declining budgets and resources.
