Many continue to remain skeptical about a crime committed by a California mother after charges were filed against her.
Wired PR News – Police in Tracy, California have reportedly been inundated with calls pertaining to the case of a mother charged with the murder and rape of her daughter’s 8 year-old playmate Sandra Cantu. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), many are in disbelief that Melissa Huckaby committed the heinous acts that even had veteran law enforcement officials baffled initially.
As noted by the AP, data from the U.S. Department of Justice helps illustrate why Huckaby’s crime is deemed highly unusual. Out of over 600,000 cases, only one reportedly had similar circumstances to the killing of Sandra, a case that is not typical of sex crimes committed by female perpetrators.
David Finkelhor with the University of New Hampshire Crimes against Children Research Center is quoted in the report as stating, “It’s very, very rare for women to molest children, and when they molest children it’s very unusual for them to molest a child of this age… It’s unusual for women to kill children who are not their own. I find it really hard to speculate on the motivation.”
