Obama Calls for More Volunteerism
The president asks that more citizens take on national service projects.
Wired PR News – President Barack Obama is urging more individuals to volunteer. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the president signed bill a Tuesday that put $5.7 billion into AmeriCorps service programs, and has asked that citizens do more in national service.
Obama is quoted in the report as stating of the measure, “It creates opportunities to serve for students, seniors and everyone in between… And it is just the beginning of a sustained, collaborative and focused effort to involve our greatest resource — our citizens — in the work of remaking this nation.”
The president, noted in the report to have been a community organizer in Chicago, is further quoted as stating, “I’m asking you to help change history’s course, put your shoulder up against the wheel… And if you do, I promise you your life will be richer, our country will be stronger, and someday, years from now, you may remember it as the moment when your own story and the American story converged, when they came together, and we met the challenges of our new century.”
