Arlen Specter Party Shift
Many react to the decision of the Republican congressman to change political parties.
Wired PR News – Arlen Specter shocked the Senate with news that he was switching political parties. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Specter, a long time Republican announced that he would become a candidate for the Democratic 2010 primaries.
Specter is quoted as stating of his decision at a news conference, “I have found myself increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy and more in line with the philosophy of the Democratic Party… I am not prepared to have my 29 year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate.” The 79 year-old Senator is further quoted as stating of Republicans, “They don’t make any bones about their willingness to lose the general election if they can purify the party. I don’t understand it, but that’s what they said.”
As noted by the AP, the change puts Senate Democrats one step ahead for the 60 votes needed to reach the filibuster proof mark.
