Democrats decide not to honor the former Republican’s accumulated seniority.
Wired PR News – Senator Arlen Specter will not maintain his 28 years of accumulated seniority as initially believed after switching political parties. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the former Republican expressed in a statement expectations that in 2011, “my seniority will be maintained under the arrangement I worked out.”
As noted by the AP, Specter remarked previously that he would be granted the same treatment in regards to seniority accumulated from over two decades in office after switching to the Democrat party. However, a resolution passed Tuesday night made the senator a junior Democrat on committees he is a member of.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is quoted in the report as stating of Specter’s transition, “I think everyone should just kind of relax and understand he’s a Democrat… We’re doing our best to try to make him happy as a Democrat. I think he is.”
