Dallas Philanthropist Takes Issue with School District Cuts

A local philanthropist criticizes Dallas ISD’s superintendent for magnet school budget cuts.
Wired PR News – A Dallas philanthropist criticized the Dallas Independent School District’s plan for magnet school budget cuts. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, Peter O’Donnell Jr., who has supported Dallas school education improvement projects through his foundation, expressed concerns in a letter this week about the district’s proposal for cutting the budgets for several magnet schools.
As noted in the report, Superintendent Michael Hinojosa announced previously that budget cuts would be made due to overfunding and the potential loss of federal money. However, officials reportedly found that several magnet schools would be exempt from certain rules for federal funding and would not have to be cut. Hinojosa is said to have intentions on cutting their budgets regardless.
O’Donnell is quoted in the report as stating in his letter of the issue, “Apparently my concerns were well-founded despite assurances I was given that this would not be the case.”
