Obama to Reform Military Tribunals
The president surprises many with the decision to restart military tribunals.
Wired PR News – President Barack Obama has stated that he would revive the military tribunals, which will reportedly restore some legal protections for detainees. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the decision was met with mixed emotion as some accused the president of going back on promises made during his presidential campaign, and others citing the decision as necessary.
Senator Joe Lieberman is quoted by the AP as stating of the issue, “By taking this action, President Obama has reinforced that we are at war, and that the laws of war should apply to these prisoners.”
Obama is quoted in the report as stating in the announcement of his decision, “This is the best way to protect our country, while upholding our deeply held values.” The president further noted that the restored tribunals would be significantly changed from those held under the Bush administration.
