Jill Biden offers Scripps Spelling Bee finalists words of encouragement

The Vice President’s wife tells spellers to be confident in the competition.

Wired PR News – The wife of Vice President Joe Biden offered words of encouragement for spellers during the championship round at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Jill Biden spoke of the importance of remaining confident throughout the competition. Biden is quoted in the report as stating to the audience Thursday, “confidence is the most important thing you can give a child.”

Several of the young spellers commented on their nervousness in the finals. Neetu Chandak, 13, is quoted in the report as stating, “I was getting real dizzy… I didn’t want to mess up when I’m getting real close to the finals.” Serena Laine-Lobsinger, also 13, is further quoted by the AP as stating, “I was just shocked to get to the semifinals… it is a pleasant surprise when I get a word right.”

The winner of the spelling bee will be awarded $40,000 in cash and prizes.
