A man in Montana received jail time for stealing dinosaur bones.
Wired PR News – A man in Montana was recently sentenced to jail time for theft of dinosaur bones. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Nathan Murphy was given 60 days in jail for stealing raptor bones from a private ranch. He is also set to be sentenced in July for a separate theft of fossils that were allegedly stolen from the Bureau of Land Management.
Murphy is quoted in the report as stating of his case, “The investigation created a poster boy… They’re going to have Nate Murphy to hold up to the public and say, ‘Don’t pick up nothing on public land, and know where you are at.’ They needed somebody like me.”
As noted by the AP, Murphy is a commercial fossil hunter, who has been recognized for discovering the well preserved duckbilled hadrosaur, referred to as Leonardo, in 2000. The mummified dinosaur was said to be 77 million years old.
