Fired Inspector General Defends Work
Recently fired inspector general Gerald Walpin speaks in defense of his probe into AmeriCorps.
Wired PR News – Gerald Walpin, an inspector general who was recently fired from the position by President Barack Obama, is defending his actions in regards to investigating national service programs such as AmeriCorps. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Walpin stated in an AP interview that his investigations included factual and honest reporting.
Walpin is quoted by the AP as stating, “I know that I and my office acted with the highest integrity as an independent inspector general should act.”
The president is quoted in the report as stating of Walpin’s conduct in a letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Joe Biden, “It is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as inspectors general… That is no longer the case with regard to this inspector general.”
Obama reportedly fired Walpin this week following Walpin’s investigation into the misuse of AmeriCorps funds, and being criticized for the manner in which the probe was handled.
