Federal Judge Impeached by House
A federal judge in Texas was impeached by the House on Friday.
Wired PR News – A U.S. District Judge was impeached by the House on Friday; marking the first time a federal judge has been impeached in two decades. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Judge Samuel Kent of Texas was impeached following his imprisonment for lying to officials in regards to accusations that he sexually assaulted two female employees.
Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative John Conyers is quoted by the AP as stating, “The conduct at issue here is both shocking and shameful.”
As noted in the report, Kent began serving a 33-month sentence in a Massachusetts federal prison on Monday. The judge has reportedly refused to resign from his position in an attempt to maintain his salary; however, a Senate conviction on the impeachment charges would force him to lose his post.
