Wired PR News – A woman in Minnesota has been fined an astronomical sum for illegal music downloads. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Jammie Thomas-Rasset was found by a federal jury to be in violation of copyright infringement laws for file sharing of 24 downloaded songs.
As noted by the AP, Thomas-Rasset has been ordered to pay recording companies $1.92 million, or the equivalent of $80,000 for each of the downloads. Thomas-Rasset is quoted in the report as stating of the money, “There’s no way they’re ever going to get that… I’m a mom, limited means, so I’m not going to worry about it now.” Her attorney is further quoted as stating of the case, “Only Jammie Thomas’s computer was linked to illegal file-sharing on Kazaa… They couldn’t put a face behind the computer.”
