Multiple Kidney Transplant Record Set
A Maryland doctor recently completed an eight-way kidney transplant, the first in history.
Press Release Service - Wired PR News – A surgeon in Maryland has reportedly performed the largest multiple kidney donation ever completed. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Dr. Robert Montgomery, Johns Hopkins Hospital chief surgeon, and physicians from four hospitals in different states across the U.S. performed eight kidney transplantation surgeries over the course of three weeks in a large donation chain.
Montgomery is quoted by the AP as stating, “We finally beat the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ record for domino transplants… We hope this creates a movement that encourages other transplant centers to adopt the model we used.” Montgomery is further noted to state that with nationwide participation in computer matching among transplant centers, 1,500 transplants annually could be performed in the United States when matches are generated from the donor pool.
