Critics of Sotomayor attack her affiliation with a Hispanic rights group before her confirmation hearings are set to begin.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Confirmation hearings for Supreme Court justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor are set to begin next week. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), conservatives have begun criticizing Sotomayor’s affiliation with the Hispanic rights organization the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (PRLDEF) shortly before the hearings.
As noted in the report, Sotomayor was a member of the board of the organization, modeled after the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, from 1980-1992. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama is quoted by the AP to describe the group’s views as “extreme” and has stated, “This is a group that has taken some very shocking positions with respect to terrorism.”
Cesar Perales, president of the PRLDEF, is quoted in the report as stating of the attacks, “You have a reputable group that has stood up for the civil rights of Latinos for 37 years… To suddenly be accused of being something bad, and that anyone associated with it should not be allowed to serve on the Supreme Court, to me is shocking.”
