Press Release Service - Wired PR News – A new study shows monkeys who consume fewer calories live longer. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), scientists have found through a 20-year study that a decrease in calories increases the lifespan of primates, which has prompted an interest in research on whether the same holds true for human beings.

Dr. David Finkelstein with the National Institute on Aging is quoted by the AP as stating of the research, “What we would really like is not so much that people should live longer but that people should live healthier… The fact that there’s less disease in these animals is striking.”

Dr. Richard Weindruch, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and lead researcher of the study, is further quoted as stating, “All these pieces put together provide rather convincing evidence in our view that caloric restriction can slow the aging process in a primate species.”

More about the study is available in Friday’s publication of the Science journal.
