Young Girl’s Heart Self-Heals Following Transplant
The heart of a young girl in Britain healed itself after a transplant.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News –British doctors saved the life of a young girl, Hannah Clark, with a serious heart condition in 1995 by implanting a donor heart directly onto her own weakening heart. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the procedure led to a remarkable healing of the weakening heart; so remarkable and rare that doctors could later remove the donor heart.
As noted in the report, the experience is said to provide hope for cardiac patients once doctors can determine how Clark’s heart was healed and develop a treatment from that system. Dr. Douglas Zipes with the American College of Cardiology is quoted by the AP as stating of the study, “This shows that the heart can indeed repair itself if given the opportunity.”
Sadly, Clark developed malignant cancer due to the anti-rejection medications she had to take following the transplant. However, the now 16 year old is getting better with treatment and surgery, and is determined to live a normal life. Clark is quoted as stating of her recovery, “Thanks to this operation, I’ve now got a normal life just like all of my friends.”
