National Geographic Bee Winner Takes Silver at Championship
Eric Yang from The Colony helps his team earn a silver medal at the National Geographic Championship.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The Dallas, Texas suburb known as The Colony is the home of 13-year-old Eric Yang, the winner of the 2009 National Geographic Bee, and one of three U.S. team members who took the silver medal at the National Geographic Championship in Mexico City. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the U.S. team included Yang, Kenji Golimlim of Michigan, and Milan Sandhu of New Hampshire.
As noted in the report, the championship has been won by U.S. teams five times. This year’s team, along with two others beat out 12 other teams worldwide to compete in the finals. Alex Trebek, of television game show Jeopardy fame, moderated the competition.
Eric is quoted in the report as stating of the challenging competition, “It wasn’t what I expected…the questions were different and the graphics were different.” He is further quoted as stating of his trip to Mexico City, “It’s been really fun coming here and making new friends.” As noted by the Dallas Morning News, Eric is a student at Griffin Middle School.
