Marijuana Tax Passes in California City
Residents of Oakland vote to pass a tax on medicinal marijuana.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – Voters in Oakland, California have approved a measure to tax marijuana. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), 80 percent of residents in the city voted in favor of taxing medicinal marijuana in accordance with information from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.
As noted by the AP, the measure to tax marijuana sold at four dispensaries in the city was proposed to ease some of the financial strain on Oakland, and is expected to generate an estimated $294,000 the first year.
As further noted in the report, Oakland is the first city in the nation to impose such a tax on the sale of medicinal marijuana. Some in California, who advocate for the legalization of marijuana are reportedly hoping the change will lead to a measure for doing so in addition to regulations for the drug comparable to those for alcohol.
