Mesothelioma Cancer News (Queens, New York) – An asbestos contractor in New York has been sentenced to jail time in connection with workers’ compensation fraud. As reported by The New York Times, 71-year-old Chong-mun Chae, who owned an asbestos removal company in Queens, pleaded guilty to fraud charges Thursday, and is set to serve a sentence of almost four years in prison.
As noted in the report, Chae deceived insurance companies by claiming he had only one employee to prevent from paying over a million dollars in premiums for dozens of his workers. New York State Workers Compensation Board inspector general William Gurin is quoted by the Times as stating of the case, “The nature of the fraud is significant, and the amount is significant.” Gurin is further quoted as stating, “We’re trying to change the business climate with cases such as these… We’re making it clear that we’re enforcing the laws.”
