Judge Orders Release of Gitmo Prisoner
A federal judge has ordered the release of a Guantanamo Bay detainee.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – A judge has ordered that one of the prisoners currently being held at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp be released. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), U.S. District Judge Ellen Huvelle ordered the release of Mohammed Jawad, who is expected to be sent back to Afghanistan, Thursday, noting that a significant portion of evidence brought against him was not usable due to it being gotten by torture.
Jawad has reportedly been detained at the prison for over six years, while awaiting the outcome of a criminal case that stems from his allegedly wounding three individuals with a hand grenade. Judge Huvelle is quoted by the AP as stating, “Enough has been imposed on this young man” and expressed hopes that he would be released by August 24.
As noted by the AP, P resident Barack Obama has stated he will close the Guantanamo camp by January of next year.
