Number of Births Fall in Recession
The number of births in the U.S. reportedly decreased in 2008.
Press Release Service – Wired PR News – The number of births in the United States reportedly decreased last year. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), experts suggest that the recession may have played a role in a two percent decline in the number of births in the country in 2008. The decline is stated to be the first over the course of a year since the beginning of the last decade.
As noted by the AP, although the recession is believed to be a significant factor in the decline, some also suggest a decline in immigration to the U.S. has played a role, while others have expressed uncertainty about what may be the most notable cause. Mark Mather with the Population Reference Bureau is quoted in the report as stating, “If there are fewer immigrants coming to the U.S., there are fewer moms and dads… I don’t think we have enough data to know for sure what’s going on.”
