Doctor Fired After Anti-Junk Food Campaign
A Florida doctor has been fired after posting a sign outside his office warning against eating donuts.
Press Release Distribution Service – Wired PR News – A doctor in Florida seeking to promote healthier eating has been accused of taking his campaign too far . As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Dr. Jason Newsom was recently fired by the state Health Department for posting an anti-donut slogan on a sign in front of his office.
As noted by the AP as part of his efforts to fight obesity Newsom posted signs with warnings such as “Sweet Tea (equals) Liquid Sugar” and “French Fries (equals) Thunder Thighs” on an electronic sign outside. However, action was taken against the doctor after he posted “America Dies on Dunkin.”
Newsom is quoted in the report as stating of his actions, “I picked on doughnuts because those things are ubiquitous in this county. Everywhere I went, there were two dozen doughnuts on the back table. At church, there were always doughnuts on the back table at Sunday school. It is social expectation thing.” Newsom further remarked, “My method was a little provocative and controversial… but there wasn’t a person in Bay County who wasn’t talking about health and healthy eating.”
